In today’s article, we’ll walk you through the life and career of Irv Gotti and his journey to wealth.

Early Life

Irv Gotti was born in Queens’ Hollis neighborhood in New York City on the 26th of June in 1970. His full name is Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., with his father named Irving and his mother named Nee Nee Lorenzo.

Living with his parents and 7 siblings, the family was often struggling with money during his childhood. His father worked as a cab driver, which wasn’t enough to fix their financial troubles. In high school, Irv Jr. was driven to start working as a drug dealer selling cocaine and crack.

Thankfully, his illegal activities were put to an end when he had a run-in with the authorities as FBI agents caught him soon after his “debut” in the business.

From that point on, Lorenzeo Jr. cleaned up his act, but he’s known to still be friends with some gangsters from his old neighborhood to this day.

This was in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lorenzo Jr. had decided to pursue a career in the music industry as his neighborhood was a source of great influence and talent for the world of hip-hop, which was rapidly growing at the time.

Career

Lorenzo Jr. kicked off his career in the early 1990s as a DJ playing in multiple New York clubs.

He was then a promising young producer whose debut came along in 1995 with the release of the song and music video: “The Natural” in collaboration with Mic Geronimo. The same year also witnessed his directing of “Joy to the World” by Mariah Carey.

His breakthrough, however, came in 1996 when he worked on the production of Jay-Z’s debut album “Reasonable Doubt.” With his name now on the map, Lorenzo was soon working with several hit artists.

It was also during this time that Lorenzo Jr. changed his stage name to Irv Gotti. The suggestion was Jay-Z’s idea as a tribute to John Gotti, the notorious New York crime boss.

This period was also when Gotti started his talent-scouting endeavors. He worked as a repertoire rep and an artist for a few record labels as well.

All these positions contributed to Gotti’s experience in the business side of the industry and paved the way for him to become a grade-A record executive.

Once he began working at Def Jam Records, he introduced Lyor Cohen to DMX, an up-and-coming rapper, and ended up as royalty. Jay-Z also joined Def Jam after Gotti worked his convincing magic.

The year now is 1999, and Irv Gotti is one of the top dogs in the hip-hop scene. It was time to make his dream come to life, so he co-founded his own record label with his brother Chris.

They called it Murder Inc., and it featured Def Jam as a 50-percent partner who also provided Irv with a $3 million loan to get the wheel spinning.

Other industry giants such as Sony Music and Universal also distributed for Gotti’s label. In just a couple of years, Murder Inc. became a sensational success.

The label released many hits, including “What’s Luv?” featuring Ja Rule, Fat Joe, and Ashanti in 2001.

He produced Next Friday‘s song “We Murderers Baby” and composed songs for Angel: One More Road to Cross and numerous other movies.  He also worked on hit songs such as “I’m Real” and “Ain’t It Funny” by Jennifer Lopez.

After a period of serious legal issues during the early 2000s, Irv Gotti continued to pump out music. He joined forces with The Game to produce “Nice” in 2008, and in 2011 appeared in an episode of Cona and wrote “Foolish” for About Time.

In 2014, Irv Gotti wrote and produced The Other Woman‘s “I’m Coming Out” and remixed “I’m Real” for Jennifer Lopez’s Dance Again documentary. Between 2018 and 2019, most of his work was with Kanye West, such as the single “Brothers.”

Gotti explained in later posts that he’ll get $50 million for his matters, and the other $50 million will go to Universal Music Group as it owns his original partner, Def Jam. He also said that the remaining $200 million is a commitment by Iconoclast to invest in his future TV productions.

Controversy

In 2003, 50 law officers raided the headquarters of Murder Inc. in Manhattan on the base of charges of money laundering and having connections with New York drug kingpins, particularly Kennet McGriff. This caused the label to change its name to The Inc.

In 2005, Gotti and his brother surrendered and faced trial for money laundering allegations where he supposedly helped his friend conceal more than $1 million of drug money. The pair pleaded not guilty.

At the end of it all, they were acquitted on all charges.

Personal Life

Irv Gotti was married to Debbie Lorenzi, and he has 3 kids with her. Around the late 2000s, Debbie accused him of having an affair with Ashanti, and in 2013, their divorce was finalized.

Currently, Irv has been in a relationship with Ashley Martelle for some years. The couple is said to be married nowadays.
