Getting The Most Out of Your Sleeping Habits

I would venture to argue that 99% of you reading this don’t care much about your sleep habits or morning routine. It’s alright; I’m with you. I’ve largely never cared about my sleep habits, and for most of my life, I’ve gotten by on a measly 5 1/2 hours of sleep while pumping my mornings with coffee to make up for it. But, is this the most efficient way to be the best version of yourself? To bring your A-game, whether it be at work or for your business? The answer is almost always an emphatic no.

The problem is, a lot of the wealthiest people in the world prioritize their sleeping habits and morning routines before anything else, and attribute this as a massive aspect of their success. Why aren’t we doing the same? Let’s take a look at the habits of 3 of the world’s most well-known entrepreneurs (via sleepopolis.com).

1. Jeff Bezos

 Amount of Sleep per night: 8 hours

Yep, the richest man in the world sleeps a full workday, at night: surprise, surprise. Bezos’s success speaks for itself (Net worth of $115.9 billion). However, he prioritizes sleep above all else. The Amazon Founder/CEO refuses to go a day without getting his 8 hours of sleep, to avoid making “tired” or “grouchy” executive decisions. He routinely goes to bed early at 9 pm and wakes up early, at 5 am. On top of that, he wakes up without an alarm clock, naturally. Wow.

Keep in mind, however, that Bezos does specify that he needs 8 hours. Everyone has an amount of sleep required for maximum production. For most people, that is 8 hours; however, it varies. It’s up to you to find out how many hours of sleep you need and to start prioritizing that amount for yourself.

2. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Here is what I meant when I said, “It varies.” The Rock, America’s big friendly giant and accomplished actor/wrestler starts his day on a mere 3-4 hours of sleep. He likes to be up before the rest of the house, to get a headstart on his goals.

Can you smell what the Rock is cooking? Probably not for breakfast. He claims that his sleep schedule isn’t regimented, however, he routinely wakes up before the sun comes up every morning. Planning his day, meditating, and busting out his morning workout routine.

3. Oprah Winfrey

One of the most successful TV personalities, actresses, and activists of all time invests a lot of effort into her sleeping habits. She even has a sleep doctor, Dr. Michael Breus, one of the most well-known professionals in the space.

Like Bezos, Winfrey wakes up by way of her biological clock, insisting that alarm clocks make her “agitated.” However, unlike Bezos, she can function well on 5 1/2 hours of sleep, as opposed to his 8, focusing more on her morning routine of conscious meditation. She cited the importance of getting in touch with her outside environment.

“When I wake up now, I have the privilege of listening to real twitter.”
