Early Life

Born on June 6, 1992, Hopkins grew up in a small town in South Carolina that shadowed Clemson University, a school he would eventually attend. His father, Harris Steve Hopkins, died in a car crash when he was a baby, leaving his mother, Sabrina Greenlee, to raise four children on her own. DeAndre was the second youngest of four, growing up with older siblings Marcus Greenlee and Kesha Smith, as well as his younger sister Shanterria Cobb.

It quickly became clear that Hopkins was going to be a special athlete, developing abnormally large hands, and routinely catching six touchdown passes in a single game at the age of eight. He attended D. W. Daniel High School where he played football, basketball, and ran track and field. The young star won a state championship in basketball in his senior year while also ranking as the 12th best wide receiver in the nation.

College Career

Hopkins spent three years at Clemson University, immediately becoming the Tigers leading receiver on the football team while also playing basketball as a freshman. The team improved from 6-7 to 10-4 in his sophomore year and went on to win 11 games for the first time since 1981 in his junior year. Hopkins chose to enter the NFL draft rather than finish off his senior year at Clemson, after putting together one of the best receiving seasons in the history of the ACC, finishing the season with 82 receptions, 1,405 receiving yards, and 18 touchdowns in 13 games. He set a school record for both touchdown receptions (27) and receiving yards (3,020).

NFL Career

The Texans selected Hopkins with the 27th overall selection in 2013 as the second wide receiver off the board. He was named to the NFL’s all-rookie team in his first season, but his team finished 2-14 after consecutive first place finished in the AFC South. Hopkins made his playoff debut in 2015 losing in the wild card round, and the young receiver went on to make the first pro bowl appearance of his career. The Texans finished first in the AFC in four out of five seasons from 2015-2019 but were not able to make it past the divisional round. Hopkins’ most notable achievement with the Texans was leading the league in receiving touchdowns in 2017.

The Texans chose to move on from Hopkins heading into 2020 to pursue a rebuilding phase, trading their star player and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft to the Cardinals for David Johnson, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, and a fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft. Hopkins was named to his fifth Pro-Bowl team and was ranked as the 8th overall player on the NFL top 100 list. He became the youngest player to record 700 receptions, passing his teammate at the time Larry Fitzgerald.

The Cardinals lost in the Wild Card round in 2021, forced to play without Hopkins who tore his MCL in week 14. The following season, the star receiver was suspended for the first six games for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy. The team finished 4-13 and Hopkins was released during the offseason.

Hopkins is entering the final year of a two-year contract with the Titans, who finished last in the AFC South this past season and are projected to do the same heading into 2024. Hopkins former team, the Houston Texans, are the favourites to win the division at +105, with the Titans sitting as a longshot at +900.

Personal Life

Hopkins mother has been permanently blind since an incident that occurred in 2002, where a girlfriend of a man she was seeing at the time tossed a bucket of bleach mixed with lye in her face in an act of jealousy. Although she is unable to watch, she still attends all of her son’s games, with her daughters by her side telling her the events as they take place. They have a ritual where her daughters will help her lean over the railing of the endzone stands to grab the football from her son after he scores a touchdown.

Career Earnings

After being drafted in the first round by the Texans in 2013, Houston signed Hopkins to a four-year $7.62 million contract. At the end of that contract, he went on to sign a second deal in Houston, a five-year contract worth $81 million. After being traded to the Cardinals in the final year of his five-year contract, he signed a new deal in Arizona that made him highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history, $54.5 million over two years.

Hopkins is now entering the final year of a two-year $26 million contract with the Titans that could reach $32 million with incentives.

2024 Net Worth

Hopkins has an approximate net worth of $40 million as of 2024, thanks to his NFL contract and endorsements from Biosteel, Verison, Therabody and much more.
