Have you ever wondered what the net worth of Britney Spears is? Otherwise known as the Princess of Pop, Spears has graced the music industry with countless classic pop hits, such as Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again, Toxic, and more.

There’s no doubt that you’ve belted out the lyrics to her songs over the years. After all, she is one of the world’s best-selling music artists and was deemed the world’s most powerful celebrity in 2002 by Forbes.

As of May 2023, the net worth of Britney Spears is $70 million.

In this post, we dive into the pop singer’s rise to stardom, how she became the “it girl of the pop world, and the struggles she’s faced along the way, including a 13-year-long conservatorship that sparked the ongoing #FreeBritney movement.

Early Life & Baby One More Time

Growing up and singing in her church choir in Kentwood, Louisiana, Spears knew she was destined to be a singer from a very young age.

Throughout her childhood, she constantly competed in and won several kids’ talent shows.

Her first professional role was as the understudy of the lead role in the off-broadway musical Ruthless.

However, her first big break as a child was when she was cast in The Mickey Mouse Club in 1992, along with stars like Justine Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.

In 1997, Spears was looking to advance her music career and signed with Jive Records at only 15 years old.

She released her first studio album Baby One More Time, in 1999, which became the best-selling debut album by any artist, and became the biggest-selling album ever by a teenage artist.

Baby One More Time sold over 10 million copies, ranked number one on the US Billboard 200, and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America after only a month.

The single Baby One More Time was number one on the Billboard 100 for two weeks and is one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Brittany’s Rise To Stardom

It’s no doubt that Spears quickly rose to stardom in a short period, but the fame and fortune didn’t stop there.

In 1999 Spears headlined her first tour and in 2000 released her second album Oops!… I Did it Again, which became another best-selling album of all time.

In 2001, she was a special guest at the Superbowl halftime show, famously performed with a seven-foot-long snake at MTV’s Video Music Awards, and released her third album, Britney.

In the years to come, Spears gained more creative control over her music.

She co-produced most of the material on her fourth album In the Zone, and the hit single Toxic, which won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

In 2004, Spears married dancer Kevin Federline and they both starred in their reality show Britney and Kevin: Chaotic.

The two welcomed their first son Sean Preston in 2005 and their second son Jayden James in 2006.

Facing Obstacles

Although Spears may have appeared to be living the dream, in 2007, her personal struggles were broadcasted for the world to see.

In January 2007, Spears lost her aunt to ovarian cancer and stayed in a drug rehabilitation center for less than 24 hours in February of that year.

The next day, Spears shaved her head and attacked a paparazzi with an umbrella, a moment that was widely captured by the media.

After shaving her head, she was admitted to rehab, but again lasted less than a day. Come that July, Spears, and Federline got divorced, and she lost custody of her two sons.

Despite clearly struggling through a difficult time, Spears’ record label prepared for her next album, Blackout.

She scheduled her to perform at the VMA’s just seven months after her infamous breakdown.

Unfortunately, the artist’s performance of “Gimme More” was widely panned by critics, for Spears was half-heartedly singing and dancing along to the songs.

In 2008, Spears suffered another breakdown in which she took prescription amphetamines and locked herself in her bathroom with one of her sons, refusing to hand him over.

Once emergency officials got Spears out of the bathroom, she was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold, which is used to hold patients that are a danger to themselves or others.

After that, Spears was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship, a legal arrangement intended for people who are deemed incapable of taking care of themselves.

Her father, Jamie, and attorney Andrew Wallet were co-conservators and in complete control of her personal and economic assets.

Jamie and Wallet were essentially in control of the singer’s life.

Britney’s Comeback

Despite overcoming many obstacles, Spears was able to land back on top by the end of 2008.

The documentary Britney For the Record showcased Spears’ comeback and was a hit among audiences.

She came out with yet another number-one album, Circus, and was the youngest female artist to have five albums debut at number one, which earned her a Guinness World Record.

At the VMA’s that year, Spears pre-taped a comedy sketch with Jonah Hill that was well received by audiences, and she won awards for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year.

She embarked on another massive world tour for Circus in 2009, released her album Femme Fatale in 2011, and was a judge on the X-Factor in 2012.

Here she earned a reported salary of $15 million, making her the highest-paid judge of all time on a singing competition show.

In addition, from 2013-2017, Spears had a Las Vegas residency, in which she performed concert after concert in the same location, which grossed over $137.7 million.

With five hit records, six world tours, and a wildly successful residency on top of numerous awards and accolades under her belt at this time, it seemed like nothing could stop Spears.

By 2018 Spears stopped performing. In 2019, Wallet resigned as co-conservator without stating why, and her father Jamie became the sole conservator of her estate.

That same year, she was supposed to embark on another Las Vegas residency that would’ve earned her $350 thousand a night.

However, she ended up canceling it after her father suffered a colon rupture.

According to a fan podcast, Britney’s Gram, Jamie had allegedly canceled Spears’ second Las Vegas residency because she refused to take her medication.

Jamie was also accused of holding Spears in a psychiatric facility against her will after breaking a no-driving rule.

The podcast also claimed that Spears’s conservatorship was supposed to have ended in 2009.

These allegations gave rise to the #FreeBritney movement.

Fans, celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, and nonprofit organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union demanded that she be released from the psychiatric facility.

The #FreeBritney movement began in 2009, and the movement continued to proliferate in 2021.

People everywhere continue to fight for her freedom, and it’s evident that the singer wants her life back.

Most Recent Conservator News

In November 2020, Spears filed an official motion to remove her father as co-conservator.

According to an article from Forbes, Spears told her lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III on many occasions that she is afraid of her father and wouldn’t perform again if he was in charge of her.

Additionally, an article from Glamour stated that Spears’ lawyer requested that Bessemer Trust Company become the sole conservator.

However, the judge denied Spears’ request to remove her dad as conservator, and Bessemer Trust was named as the co-conservator.

Spears recently spoke out in court on June 23, 2021, where she revealed more details about the conservatorship. Spears called the conservatorship abusive and that she felt forced to perform.

She also had a lack of privacy, was forced to obtain an IUD as a form of birth control, had to take medication, such as lithium, against her will, and was forced to attend therapy sessions.

Spears noted how the conservatorship was doing more harm than good– she was traumatized, scared, and alone.

After 13 years under someone else’s control, the artist pleads for her life back.

Bessemer Trust resigned as conservator because of Spears’ testimony and her desire to end the conservatorship, which officially leaves her father, Jamie as the sole conservator.

There will be another hearing on July 14 to reassess Spears’ case, but until then, it is clear that fans and celebrities everywhere are fighting to #FreeBritney.

Britney Spears Net Worth

As of May 2023, Britney Spears has a net worth of $70 million.

It is evident that Spears’ conservatorship is impacting her mental and physical health and well-being, but you may not have known that it impacts her net worth too.

Spears has sold more concert tickets and albums than stars such as Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez, whose net worths are well over $100 million.

So why isn’t her net worth in the hundreds of millions as well?

Given her insanely successful career that included numerous best-selling albums, tours, and a concert residency that earned millions, the star appears to have earned a fortune.

But it’s the conservatorship that’s caused a detriment to her net worth.

Spears herself is not a big spender on personal items– the expenses come directly from her conservatorship, which her father controls.

Since 2008, Spears has paid her ex-husband Federline millions of dollars in legal fees and child support.

Although the #FreeBritney movement aims to put Spears back in control of her personal life and release her from the abuse and control she’s been forced to endure.

The movement also wants her to be able to control her financial life too. #FreeBritney aims to put Spears back in control of her personal life,

Spears has not only taken a mental and physical toll from this conservatorship but a financial one too. #FreeBritney, for control over her personal life and her well-deserved fortune.
