Early Life

Corcoran was born in Edgewater New Jersey on March 10th, 1949. She grew up in a large household where she was one of ten children.

Raised Catholic, she attended Catholic School for most of her life. She was far from a good student and ended up flunking out of her high school freshman year.

Corcoran ended up finishing high school and went on to graduate from college with a degree in education in 1971. After graduation, she went on to teach at school for a year.

She left after one year, realizing it wasn’t what she wanted to do with her life. She took up several side jobs in the consequent years, like being a waitress and renting apartments in New York City.

The Corcoran Group

While being a waitress, her boyfriend at the time convinced her to start her own Real Estate Company. It was 1973, and she was already a receptionist at Giffuni Brothers’ Real Estate Firm.

She knew a decent amount about real estate from renting homes in NYC so she decided to go for it. So, she and her boyfriend co-founded The Corcoran-Simonè, With just $1,000 that her boyfriend loaned.

Corcoran was relentless in growing the business. In the mid-1970s, she added the Corcoran Report, which was a newsletter covering real estate trends in New York City. She and her husband ran that business for 7 years before getting divorced.

After the divorce, Corcoran rebranded the company to The Corcoran Group. She ran that business all the way until 2001, when she sold the business to NRT for 66 million dollars.

Key Takeaways

School isn’t for everyone

Just like Gary Vee, Corcoran wasn’t a good student. She flunked out of high school and had to transfer schools her freshman year.

She got her degree in education but didn’t stay in education for even one year. This goes to show that school is a poor metric of success. Elon Musk said it best, “I didn’t go to Harvard, but the people who work for me did.”

Take calculated risks when starting a business

When starting a business, you shouldn’t just leave your day job. It takes time to build a business to a point where it can provide you with a full-time income. Sometimes years.

Many people shut down their businesses because they make it their full-time job too soon. Corcoran started The Corcoran-Simonè while still being a receptionist and didn’t do it full time until it gave her the income to do so. Make sure you take calculated risks with your business.

You are in control of your destiny

So many people have a reason why they can’t succeed. Maybe it’s the color of your skin, your gender, your religion.

However, Corcoran ran her real estate business back when it was very uncommon for a female to hold a position of power.

Her husband also had an affair leading to a divorce. So many “perceived” setbacks and Corcoran kept powering ahead. Remember, you are in control of your own destiny! Don’t let perceived limitations stop you from achieving your goals.
